Abstract |
The present paper suggests the study of the internal domain of construct measures to include a definition of the associated domain of measurement and conceptual analysis of indicators assumed to represent the domain as a required independent supplement to adequate empirical analyses. Illustration of this type of study was made possible by means of a theoretically based measure of motive dispositions, the Achievement Motives Scale (AMS). The empirical analyses were carried out on two language versions of the AMS on sample data from 247 female and 257 male Chinese high school students and 252 American graduate students, respectively. Findings from all samples converged to a large extent. Based on both the conceptual and empirical analyses some suggestions were offered to improve the measures' approximation to the motive constructs. The framework of the domain sampling model of generalisability theory provided a methodological tool for discussing ways of improving the construct measure.
