Abstract |
Game-based learning is being explored in a variety of academic disciplines. As students become more sophisticated game players, used to elaborate graphic environments and play functions, building a game which will challenge and engage while imparting the intended learning is difficult. In this project the researchers created an information seeking scenario using modification tools built into the computer game "NeverWinter Nights" for journalism students taking a required class, "Information for Mass Communication." After two rounds of using the game in the class there have been a number of lessons learned, by both the students and the creators of the scenario. In this paper we will describe the evolution and implementation of the NeverWinter Nights game and detail the unexpected outcomes of the experience for the students.
