Abstract |
This month’s editorial reports the results of a public opinion survey on evolution and education. The report was prepared by a coalition of learned societies and constitutes an appeal, based on the data obtained, for scientists to take the lead in communicating science to the general public. The early "Darwinists," like Ernst Haeckel and Thomas Huxley, were following the model of popular, eloquent communication set by Charles Darwin himself, as in his magisterial conclusion to On the Origin of Species, 1859:
