Abstract |
"One method for engaging students in learning about science is to deliberately present them with issues that are controversial. Other issues may generate controversy both inside and outside of science classes with little prompting from the instructor. This session will focus on (although not be limited to) current controversies surrounding the teaching of evolution and attempts by various groups to introduce "alternative perspectives" into science courses in both K-12 and higher education. This presentation will examine the strategies being employed in this nationwide effort, the role of the National Academy of Sciences in helping to confront these challenges, and how faculty in the earth and space sciences might address them both individually and collectively."
