Abstract
The purpose of this study was two-fold. First to describe students’ informal strategies for the solution of proportional problems and second to describe students’ conceptual understanding of proportion. Kaput and West’s (1994) informal levels of proportional reasoning and Sfard’s (1991) levels of conceptual development provided the framework for this description. A test and semi-structure interviews were used to gather data from 112 ten and eleven year old students. The data suggests that students use a variety of informal strategies to solve proportional problems. The results also reveal that students who have not received any formal teaching on proportion, may exhibit characteristics of internalization, condensation and even reification of the proportion concept.
