Abstract |
This web resource brings together research and scholarship to show how Guided Inquiry through school libraries in 21st century schools can be developed and implemented to enable students to learn meaningfully from the diverse and complex information sources. It articulates philosophical and professional foundations and guiding principles for Guided Inquiry based on available research. It also presents a range of strategies and approaches for developing the school library as a dynamic agent of learning in 21st century schools through Guided Inquiry. What is Guided Inquiry? Guided Inquiry is carefully planned, closely supervised targeted intervention of an instructional team of school librarians and teachers to guide students through curriculum based inquiry units that build deep knowledge and deep understanding of a curriculum topic, and gradually lead towards independent learning. Guided Inquiry is grounded in a constructivist approach to learning, based on the Information Search Process developed by Kuhlthau (provide link to document on this), for developing students’ competence with learning from a variety of sources while enhancing their understanding of the content areas of the curriculum.
