Abstract
The "Cartable électronique" (electronic schoolbag) operation launched in Grenoble by education authorities dramatically raises most of the crucial questions involved in distance learning. The analysis of possible developments demands reaching beyond didactic, pedagogical or technological questions. The present article suggests adding two dimensions to the analysis.
First of all, comprehending an operation of this nature must be enlightened by systemic investigation accounting for the main forces involved in setting up, developing and monitoring this undertaking.
Then we suggest that the introduction of Information and Communication Technologies in Education on the initiative of political and economical circles calls for an appraisal of the values at stake. Thus certain marks of reluctance point to social choices, which need a thorough long overdue debate to be dealt with.
